Maya Kent Personal Narrative

Hi, I’m Maya Kent. I’m 11 years old, but I’m almost 12, and I am in 6th grade. I moved to the enormous city of Houston, Texas a couple of weeks ago from Tallahassee, Florida. I have a 13 year old sister, Olivia, a 7 year old sister, Ellie, and a 4 month old brother, Ethan.  I do gymnastics and I love it. I used to be on a swim team and I started tennis this year.  I love to be outside and climb trees, ride bikes and roller blade.  I also like to play piano do, crafts and draw. I love reading. My favorite books are the Harry Potter series, the Penderwicks and many of books by Wendy Mass. My favorite subjects are probably math and writing. I love the beach. I also like to bake and cook. My favorite food is pretty much any kind of Mexican food. My favorite color is purple, and my favorite Bible verse is Jeremiah 29:11.

Five years ago when I was 6 I had a not very fun experience. it was a great summer day when we lived in Michigan. Mom and dad had just gotten back from Florida because we were moving there that summer and they were looking at houses. We had a little pool that I was swimming in with my friend Alyssa and my sister Olivia. We had gotten containers out of the recycling and we were filling them with the water and dumping them on each other’s heads. We also had gotten a glass jar, but we didn’t know that it had been in the recycling because it was cracked.

After a while we dropped the glass jar somewhere in the pool. We couldn’t find it but we did not think it was a big deal so we stopped looking for it. A little while later I jumped off the ladder into the pool and I landed right on the glass jar. The jar had broken and the glass sliced into my foot. I remember seeing the water around my  left foot quickly turning red and I freaked out. I was screaming and crying. Alyssa and Olivia were freaking out too. I don’t remember much except that it was hurting extremely bad. My mom was on the phone and she heard us so she rushed out. We got my foot wrapped up in a beach towel. My dad carried me to the car and drove me to Emergency room.
When we got there we waited for a long time. My foot was still very painful and was bleeding, so we kept it wrapped up tightly. I had a huge gash in the side of my left foot. Finally, we got to go back. I laid in the hospital bed still in my wet and uncomfortable swim suit. But then we had to wait for the doctor. I knew I had to get stitches, but the idea of someone getting a needle and thread and sewing up my foot was not very appealing.
When the doctor came I held my dad’s hand tightly while he gave me a big shot right into the gash. That was very painful but after that my foot was numbed so I couldn’t feel my foot very much. My dad watched, but I didn’t, while I got stitches. I just remember crying. It did not take long  for the doctor to do that. Before we left the doctor put a bandage and gauze over my foot and then wrapped it up. Then I was wheeled outside in a wheelchair and helped into the car and we went home.
The next morning my friend Alyssa stopped by on her way to school to see if I was all right. I had to have my stitches for a couple of weeks after that. It was hard to do things I normally would because I could barely stand on my foot the first week without it hurting. We had to change my bandages often and put stuff on it. Lots of my friends even signed my wrap.
Finally, after a long couple of weeks I went to have my stitches out. Afterward, I still had to wear a special kind of bandage and wear closed toe shoes even though it was the middle of the summer and I normally wouldn’t wear shoes at all! The deep cut in my foot also left me a scar. At first it was much more noticeable than it is now, but you can still see it. This was definitely not my favorite experience or a fun one. It was also my first, and only, trip to the ER. But now I know one of the reasons why you’re not supposed to have glass jars on the beach or by the pool! I probably should have thought through what I was doing a little more because it was not a very safe thing to do. But at least next time I will have learned my lesson not to play with glass jars.

  3. Great job Maya! I also love climbing trees! I love the way you explained the way it felt. I had to get a deep gash on my head glued once and I hated it. If I would have been in your shoes I wouldn't have let the doctor get even 30 feet from me! You were so brave.
